Scoring Rules              Team Rosters              Current Standings              Previous Seasons

Introduction

At the opening ceremonies on New Years Day, dignitaries from the Commissioner’s Office proclaimed the start of the SCOWstats Fantasy League’s third season.  As was the case last year, many guests on hand for the occasion wondered which team will provide the stiffest competition for the two-time defending champion Gavels of the State Public Defender’s Office—hoping that changes made to team rosters during the offseason will confront the Gavels with stiff competition.

Seeking to make this more likely, the Selection Committee allowed each team (other than the Gavels) to recruit one additional law firm during a three-month period following the end of last season.  The Gavels’ principal rival, the Affirmed, made the biggest splash during this acquisition window by signing the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL).  Given the sorts of cases favored by WILL, and the current makeup of the supreme court, the Affirmed will likely add 20 points or more to their season’s total by winning the recruiting battle for WILL.  No doubt this is why the team received 19 of the 50 first-place votes in the sportswriters’ preseason poll released at the end of 2017.  The Gavels remain the favorite, to be sure, but not by the polling margin that they enjoyed at the start of last season.  Behind these two rivals, according to the sportswriters, the Writs, Waivers, and Citations will finish in descending order.

Continuing the practice of previous seasons, SCOWstats will post periodic scoring updates in the weeks to come, followed by an awards banquet in the summer to honor the champion.  In the meantime, click on the corresponding links to view the scoring system and the new rosters of individual firms for the 2017-18 season.
